Angraecum sesquipedale

The tribe Vandeae belongs to the family Orchidaceae, sub-family Epidendroideae.

This tribe contains 1,700-2,000 species divided in 150 genera.

The classification of taxa within this tribe is still largely based on the morphology of the flowers but additional molecular studies will change the classification in the future significantly.

Thus it is only a temporary classification based on hypotheses.


These orchids are pan-tropical epiphytes: they occur in tropical Asia, the Pacific Islands, Australia and Africa.

Many of these orchids are important, such as Phalaenopsis and Vanda.
