Maxillaria rufescens

The tribe Maxillarieae belongs to the family Orchidaceae, sub-family Epidendroideae.

It contains 70 to 80 genera with approximately 1,000 species that grow primarily in tropical America.

They are mostly epiphytic or lithophytic. Some species are saprophytic.

Most have pseudo-bulbs but a few have stalks like reeds or thick underground stem.

The flowers have four pollinia.
