The Oncidium alliance is part of the family Orchidaceae, sub-family Epidendroideae, tribe Maxillarieae, sub-tribe Oncidiinae.

Oncidium is a very popular type of orchid for hobbyists. With hundreds of species and thousands of hybrids, Oncidium alliance orchids offers something for every taste.

Alliance members are epiphytic, terrestrial or lithophytic orchids. They have pseudobulbs, sympodial growth, each new growth springing from the growth of previous years.

Plants of this genus range from very small plants to very large specimens.

The leaves are distichous (alternately in two opposite rows), flat and keeled on the back or conical.

The flowers of most species of Oncidium are yellow and brown, but there are some species with red or maroon flowers.

The Oncidium alliance can be found from Florida to Argentina as well as in the Bahamas and Caribbean Islands.

The habitat varies strongly, leading to a large variation in size, shape and flower color as well as in culture requirements.
