The sub-tribe Coelogyninae belongs to the family Orchidaceae, sub-family Epidendroideae, tribe Arethuseae.

This sub-tribe is spread throughout the world,  in warm, temperate and cold climates.

Etymology:

Coelogyninae: derived from the Greek words koilos (hollow) and gyne (woman), referring to the concave stigma.
