Cranichideae is characterized by an inflorescence with small tubular flowers that never fully open. The flower has a short and robust gynostemium with erected stamen.
Cranichideae grow mainly in tropical and subtropical regions, rarely in temperate regions in Europe, North America and South America, Asia and Australia.
The tribe includes six sub-tribes containing about 90 genera and 600 species.
